Meet "Tiny" the 125 million years young Stegosaurus

An exciting event is coming to the shopping centre on Saturday 28th May 2016.  For the first time ever a 'real live' dinosaur will be walking the malls of the Guildhall in Stafford.

"Tiny" is a 125 million years young dinosaur brought to life by the wonders of modern science. You can pet her, you can feed her, you can talk to her in dinosaur language; just make sure you avoid the dreaded Thagomizer or you might end up extinct yourself!

Our dinosaur is accompanied by a palaeontologist who presents alively and informative natural history show in which audiences are encouraged to share their knowledge of dinosaurs and to come up with some scientific theories of their own – comparative anatomy has never been so much fun.

This is an amazing opportunity to get up close & personal with a ‘real live’ dinosaur for the first time since the Cretaceous Era and to find out a few things about how they lived and why they disappeared. For example, dinosaurs aren’t quite as extinct as you might think; if you look out of your window you might see one right now!”

As well as meeting "Tiny" children coming along to the Dinosaur Experience Day can participate in free colouring and mask making workshops as well as join in with the free face painting and our tattoo parlour.

Tiny will be making 3 x 25 minute appearances during the day at 11.00am, 12.30pm and 2.00pm.

Stafford Armed Forces, Past & Present - new exhibition

As Stafford prepares to welcome new personnel to RAF/MoD Stafford, an inspiring exhibition will go on display in the Guildhall Shopping Centre which records the human story connected to the past and present of the MoD.

The main aim is that through this work the rich cultural and historical significance of the base is acknowledged and celebrated.

A thought provoking exhibition of photographs donated to the project, enable visitors to understand why many of the veterans have settled in Stafford and find out what the serving personnel like about the area, what it has to offer and how much they appreciate the welcome given to them by the wider community.

The aim is that the people of Stafford not only increase their already evident sense of pride in MoD Stafford but also in themselves; in how they have supported and welcomed the Armed Forces Personnel over the years and how much this has been appreciated.

For this project, funded by the Armed Forces Community Covenant, twenty veterans and current serving personnel of MoD, formally RAF Stafford, were interviewed about their time at the base.

National Armed Forces Day will be marked by photographic exhibitions hosted by shops in Mill Street, Stafford, from 22nd June to 3rd July and pieces of work produced by year 6 children, aged 10 to 11 years old from primary schools local to the base and inspired by the stories and photographs will also be on display in One Staffordshire Place.

The exhibition will then move to the Guildhall between 13th July and 26th August before it returns to the Stafford base for the MoD Open Day on 29th August.

Year 9 students from Weston Road Academy have actively supported this project by producing a bespoke information handout on the exhibition and a leaflet on the project during their IT lessons.

The schools involved in the project are St Andrews in Weston, St John’s, St Patricks and Weston Road Academy in Stafford.

Acknowledgements

None of this work would have been possible without the generous support of The Royal British Legion, Sandon Road Baptist Church, MoD Stafford and Tactical Supply Wing, Weston Road Academy, Staffordshire Museum Service, many of the shops in Mill Street Stafford and the interviewees; Karl Jones, Chris Shipton, Matthew Duff, Emma Hemmings, Jo Tomsett, Russ Heynes, SSgt Subaraj, Alan Preece, Victor Ingledew, Morris Roden, Mr Leslie Broomfreild, Ray Bassett, Jim Morton, Bill Knight, Jack Kennedy, John Pink, David Thompson, Darren Easton, Les Bouts and Eric Gregory.

ART & FASHION EXTRAVAGANZA

The Guildhall Shopping Centre and Stafford College students have joined forces to celebrate Adult Learners Week with a major new event.

Stafford’s largest retail destination will be opening at night for the only time this year on Thursday 18th June to help young people host a fashion extravaganza, featuring students’ designs with fashion shows on the malls, and art and media displays in 6 of the Centre’s empty units.

Graphics design students will create flyers, posters and invitations for the event, while the catering department will produce refreshments for the 1000 expected guests. A team of carpenters, decorators, electricians and students have been working for a full 3 weeks to transform the empty shop units into stylish art galleries and for the special launch event a catwalk will be positioned on the shopping malls for fashion shows hosted by Year 2 and Year 3 Fashion and Design students.

There will be live music, dance and performance to keep everyone entertained, and at least 15 of the Centre’s retailers, including Top Shop, Poundland, Carbon and Kismet Rose, will open late to support the event.

Parking will be free after 5.30pm and the car park will stay open late until 9.30pm.

DTZ’s Senior Management Surveyor Steve Moran said: “We jumped at the chance to work with Stafford College on this as it gives us an opportunity to help young people and offers the community a unique opportunity to see the talented work produced by our local students.

“Putting together an event on this scale will be a great experience for everyone involved, but particularly for the students who will be able to use it to develop their skills and portfolios.”

The fashion shows will take place on 18th June, between 6pm and 8.00pm, and repeated during the day on Saturday 20th. The exhibitions in the empty units will run for the whole of Adult Learners Week (18th-24th June).

While the event is by invitation, the Centre will still be open for people to pass through.

X MARKS THE SPOT FOR GUILDHALL TREASURE HUNTERS

Budding Sherlock Holmes are required for a forthcoming Guildhall Shopping Centre event.

A treasure trail around the Guildhall in Stafford on the 30th and 31st May, will see intrepid style-detectives seeking answers to a series of clues, to be in with a chance of winning big prizes.

And as well as £200 in shopping vouchers for the winners, there will be a prize for everyone who takes part.

The #STYLEHUNTERS weekend, which is thought to be the first event of its kind in the country, is a partnership between the Shopping Centre and more than 20 of their stores, including River Island, JD Sports, and Poundland.

Guildhall Shopping Centre Marketing Manager Anne Graham said: “#STYLEHUNTERS promises to be a fun and exciting event for all the family, with free colour, style and fashion tips from our experts, and most importantly prizes, on offer to everyone who takes part.

“And if that were not enough, there will be further prizes of up to £100 in shopping vouchers for the best images posted from the hotspot at the finishing point, to our Facebook or Twitter pages!”

The #STYLEHUNTERS partnership is the brainchild of “Only on the High Street” - style consultants who specialise in organising events for shopping centres and high street retailers.

Director Laraine Robathan-Field said: “Traditional retailing continues to face stiff competition from the growth of online shopping, so it is imperative for retailers to be innovative and think creatively to survive and compete.

“The key is to provide the customer with an experience they can’t get online.

“#STYLEHUNTERS will do just that – it will help the Guildhall engage with customers and encourage them to visit and shop at the Centre by providing them with a fun and exciting experience.”

Steve Moran, Management Surveyor at DTZ who manage the Guildhall Shopping Centre said “It can be challenging to create events that will appeal to a wide range of customers but #STYLEHUNTERS ticks all the boxes.  It is suitable for all ages and abilities, will offer terrific prizes and encourage interaction between our customers and our stores”.

Mayor's Marvellous Fun Day
Are you coming along to the Mayor's Marvellous Fun Day in Stafford on Saturday 10th May? What's it all about? Read on to find out .....

In 1614 King James I sealed a Royal Charter which established Stafford's mayoral system. The first hold...er of the new post was wool merchant Matthew Cradocke, one of the key supporters of the Charter.

Prior to 1614 Stafford was governed by two Bailiffs elected from a pool of twenty-one Capital Burgesses.

In 1617 King James I visited Stafford and was so impressed with the Mayor's silver-gilt Mace, paid for by Matthew Cradocke, that he ordered "it should never be allowed to rest". Even today the Mace is always kept in an upright position.

In the past 400 years the longest serving Mayor was Walter CT Mynors, who served between 1897 and 1901. Mrs Ellen Marie South became the first female Mayor of Stafford in 1932.

Saturday 10 May
10am - 4pm Market Square

The Mayor's Marvellous Fun Day is a free event in Market Square, Stafford helping to celebrate 400 years since the mayoral system was established. Throughout the day there will be fun activities for all the family to enjoy face painting, street theatre, entertaining shows, rides and much more

At 1pm here will be a parade of military and civic dignitaries through the Town Centre to welcome the new Mayor of Stafford, Cllr Ray Sutherland.

Staffordshire Regiment - Boxes to Afghanistan

The Staffordshire Regiment is currently serving as one of the last units in Afghanistan before the handover to the Afghan Government in mid 2014. The 3 Mercian Soldiers have also had the added pressure of having the tour extended from 6 to 9 months during which the facilities in Afghan are slowly being withdrawn. By the time the Regiment get towards the end of their tour they will be operating under basic facilities. Now Christmas has passed and the troops have received their parcels from family and loved ones, morale is at a high. To further boost their morale and let the troops know that we care we are holding a" boxes for soldiers" day. This is a chance for the people of Stafford and surrounding areas to give a item/s to be sent to the troops.

BOXES FOR SOLDIERS

Saturday 8th March 2014

0900 to 1530

Guildhall Shopping Centre, Stafford

We will be located in the ex-Virgin Media unit at the Guildhall Shopping Centre on the above date and time and will provide the boxes for the public to come and donate and pack a shoe box. This will then be sealed and labelled and sent to the troops of 3 Mercian Regiment. If the public wish they can leave the boxes for us to pack and seal.

Items not permitted would be aerosols, chocolate or crisps and biscuits.

All other items any be checked before packing.

We have found from experience that books are too heavy and this reduces the items per box.

During the last tour, Stafford sent 260 boxes. We aim to beat this number and hopefully aim to send one box per soldier.

Come along have a chat, Donate a item/s. Pack a box.

The Chairman and Branch look forward to meeting you all.

Clic Sargent at the Guildhall

Everyday, 10 children and young people in the UK hear the shocking news that they have cancer. Treatment normally starts immediately, is often given many miles from home and can last for up to three years. Being diagnosed with cancer is a frightening experience and the emotional, practical and financial implications of treatment are intensely challenging for the whole family.

CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, and their families. We provide clinical, practical, financial and emotional support to help them cope with cancer and get the most out of life. We are there from diagnosis onwards and aim to help the whole family deal with the impact of cancer and its treatment, life after treatment and, in some cases, bereavement.

Please visit our stand in the Guildhall Shopping Centre to find out more about how you can help us support children and young people with cancer.

FREE Financial Health Check with MoneySave Solutions

With household incomes increasingly stretched, consumers in Stafford can take advantage of the offer of a free Financial Health Check if they are visiting the Guildhall Shopping Centrebetween Wednesday 5th and Saturday 8th February 2014. Staff from local money saving expert, MoneySave Solutions, will be on hand to set up appointments to conduct confidential Financial Health Checks, completely free of charge, in order to highlight areas where savings can be made and how to make the most of incoming finances.

People can review their own financial health – but it takes time and there’s always the concern that not everything has been taken into consideration.

As a provider of Financial Health Checks since 1997, we can review an individual’s current financial situation and identify the areas they should be prioritising. It is easy to miss payments or existing debts, plus we find that many consumers are unaware of how they can reduce outgoings or begin saving for a rainy day in the event of an unexpected emergencWe have an established track record of helping clients identify ways to address existing debts and get borrowing under control. Our Financial Health Check helps families manage their finances more effectively, with many working with MoneySave to create an action plan in order to tackle debt and reduce borrowing.

Plus we can help our clients find better deals on some of the big outgoings that hit their pocket every month, from car and home insurance to existing pensions and investments.

In addition, if a client is worried that they might have been mis-sold payment protection insurance (PPI) on loans or credit cards, we can review their agreements and act on their behalf if there is a case for compensation. We have found that people with debt problems are particularly in need of help in making PPI claims and a successful payment could be a vital windfall when finances are already stretched. That’s why we provide a no-obligation review that helps identify what can be claimed and what’s needed to make the claim.

A Financial Health Check should be considered by anyone who would like to make the most of their finances or just receive peace of mind that their finances are up to scratch. We work with each of our clients, face to face, to help them understand how to get the most from their money and, most importantly, reduce their debts. We, therefore, look forward to meeting people from Satfford to help them tackle their debts and make their money go further.

Shoppers heading to the Guildhall Shopping Centre from 9.30am to 5.30pm can find out more about the MoneySave Solutions free Financial Health Check.Alternatively, consumers unable to visit Guildhall Shopping Centre in Stafford can call MoneySave Solutions to arrange a no-obligation, confidential review on 0330 33 22 300.

Santa's Christmas Parade

Stafford Christmas Lights Switch-on - Saturday 23rd November

Probably the most spectacular Christmas Light Switch-on Event in Staffordshire with a full day of entertainment and fun for all the family. The day starts at 11.00am with the popular Father Christmas Parade when Santa arrives in town with his real live reindeer and a carnival procession with marching bands, dressed floats, costume characters and much, much more.

Following the parade the activities focus on Market Square where a 40ft stage and big screen are erected. Singing, dancing, competitions and demonstrations take place between 12.30pm and 4.30pm when the excitement starts to build for the big switch-on.

At 5.00pm the Christmas Lights are turned on and this is followed by a spectacular firework display launched from the roof of the Guildhall Shopping Centre. As this is a totally free event, it is extremely popular, so visitors are advised to arrive early (and please leave pushchairs and buggies at home!!)

Featuring in this year’s Father Christmas Parade are:

Apus’ Birds

These fantastical giant birds with their stunning fanned tails entertain and inspire audiences. Accompanied by Major Apus, the jungle explorer, they are a real treat for children and families. Since his honourable discharge from the army Major Apus has been exploring deepest darkest Africa, he specialises in large unusual creatures, showing off his latest find, two giant albino peacocks.

He is quite a big softy and rather than kill and stuff his prizes he shows them off and encourages conservation. He traded his blunder bus for a giant net, he says, "It creates a lot less mess, don't you know, what!". Although he is a seasoned explorer, he did get lost once in Kew Gardens!

The Birds are animated by sound effects reminiscent of a rare species from the tropical rain forest. From a distance, the Birds are impressive and magnificent, and close up, their detail is dazzling.

Hark

With neon halos, silly trumpets, amazing sound effects and accompanied by beautiful ambient music these amazing angels are a sight to behold! Their movement is quite stunning and you can see them glide their way around our parade route – almost as if they are floating on air!
